I posted earlier today but throughout the day been doing research and getting alot of different possible problems. Replaced starter, installed rear bracket, tried with and without shims but still get an awful grinding noise ,the motor use to do it and start but now wont even start,Is it starter bolts, starter, problems with outdrive, internal engine problems?

With the starter off what does the fly wheel look like? are the teeth chewed up? I would rotate the engine by hand and visually inspect them. Also while doing this is the fly wheel comming into contact with the bell housing sheild or anything else? (All this works easier with the plugs removed) It could also be the starter making the grinding noise with it not bolted to the block try it but be carefull. Hope this helps

I have inspected the teeth on the flywheel and the look fine,i bolted a new started on and also try it with shims, and also took the plugs out and hand turned the motor, i then try to crank it without plugs in and the sounding was not as bad.

Trying to understand ( your grammer) first off you need to start a process of elimination. Teeth are ok on fly wheel and fly wheel is not making contact with anything (plugs out and turning by hand and then rotating with starter) is the sound more obvious between ether one? conecting the current starter and using the systems ignition system to turn the starter over while not bolted to the block (once again be carefull). If there is an obvious sound difference in between any of these changes that is where you start. One other thing to consider is not using the shims and try mounting the starter with all bolts loose and make sure the brace is connected in a relaxed state so to say so it is not binding the starter in any direction and in a sequence tighten all the bolts and nuts so as not to create a bind of any kind on the alignment and you may have to do this numerous times uintil you find the right sequence. Note: I have never had to shim any starter make sure the nose cone isn't too long and rubbing the fly wheel could be one issue and compare it if you can to the original especially if it isn't OEM. Hope this helps!

ok so you are saying it could be something simple as tightening the starter bolts in a sequence and not a problem with the outdrive or anything internal with the motor iteslf.

Re: Grinding when starting on 3.0 mercruiser

It's possible but these are the things I would try 1st ( always the least expesive leasdt work 1st) next I would try trimming down the O/D as far as possible to take the extreme angle off the u-joints and see if that reduces the noise if all this fails the O/D is pretty simple to remove put in forward gear, remove the trim rams fromO/D and remove the six nuts from the O/D and pull but before that I would make sure of all the other possibilities 1st. Did you look at the nose cone of the starter? are ther any makes on it or any other evidence of interfearence?

yes i did look at the starter cone and everything looks ok, i got an OEM starter for it, just like the old one. so it could be the u-joints or gimbel ring or a combo of both.

crank it with plugs removed and centre wire from the coil so no power going through your plug leads.
if it cranks replace plugs.you could make sure no water was in the pots too by seeing if theres rust on the electrodes.
if it stii dont crank try pulling drive to illiminate a drive problem i.e.teeth on gears etc.
has it run recently?
