i've brought this boat back from retirement, worked through most of the issues. now its making a little bit of a grindng sound when i go from neutral to forward or reverse. i had to adjust the throttle cables to get it to run. then found that the cable had came off the shifter/tilt and trim handle. now i have to work the handle a little to insure its all the way in nuetral to get it to start. its idling around 1500 rpms. i was wondering if the idle is to high and this may cause it to grind when going into gear. its an 88 ford 2.3 omc cobra.

Way too high. In forward gear it should be running around 650-700 rpm.

Chris.........

do you feel that backing down to 650 will stop the grinding?

The 'gears' are in fact a dog clutch. They have 2 operating positions, "IN" and "OUT". Are you pushing the lever forward (reverse) slowly? If so, this is what is causing the grinding. The movement should be fairly quick. And yes 650-700 rpm will decrease the amount you hear.

Chris.........

yes, i was moving lever forward (reverse) slowly. thought i was suppose to do it this way. this weekend hope to have the time to back off on the carb to adjust the idle.

That idle is way too fast, I am suprised you can get it out of gear at all. As was said, with a dog clutch you "thunk" it into gear with a quick shift, it is not like a synchromesh on a car trans where it will grind if shifted too fast.
