1987 Mercury 25 horse. When put in reverse at idle it is ok. As I up RPM's it starts grinding in lower unit like the gears are not fully engaged. Shift cables adjusted as far as they can go for reverse. Forward has no problem. Is there a linkage that will adjust to the lower unit or is it a worn/stripped gear?

When did this all start?
Who changed the impeller last time?

I think it can be adjusted in the linkage under the cowling. I cant see what it looks like where the shift shaft connects to the linkage. But it either there or in the linkage itself.
You said it is adjusted all the way you can, but is that just the shift cable, not the linkage?

I suppose you have a manual start and tiller model. I have a 1987 8HP and it looks about the same. Never payed attention to the shift shaft and linkage connection when i did some adjustments a few months ago. My problem was it didn't open fully. There was something about a linkage that didn't move freely when going from reverse to forward. Some grinding, cleaning and lubing took care of that.

Here is where I looked at your(?) model:
http://www.dolleroffshore.com/parts.cfm?c=bt&m=1&pn=349&bn=274

Try again before you tear down the lower unit.

Good luck!
