Ground Hog (2nd life)

Last year I had a ground hog dig under my utility sheds concrete slab. Never could get a shot at it, couldn't use poison, wouldn't go in a live trap, and he (or she) was a real problem. After a couple of months, we could smell something dead from its hole under the shed. Cool :D at least I thought. Afterwards I filled in the holes and never gave it much more thought.

I just come in from my lean-to that is off of one side of the shed. ITS BACK! I don't know if it is the same one, one from a litter it may of had, but why couldn't it see a dead carcus of its species and leave?

This time, I fired up my old Cub Cadet and run a piece of 1 1/4 inch conduit from the exhaust into the hole with dirt covering the conduit. I let the tractor run for a half an hour pumping in the exhaust. I sprayed WD=40 into the carb several times which made for some nasty smelling smoke. Hopefully this does it. I know the critter seems like the one from Caddy Shack.....maybe it has the same DNA....

LOL, I can't help but laugh. I've had similar gopher problems. I'm not sure if the exhaust smelling bad would make a ground hog die quicker... but using WD-40 probably made you feel better, LOL.

Sorry, can't help it.

Why no poison? Chickens?

Here's my first line of defense

Second line is a Hav a hart trap baited with nice, green leafy vegetables. ( then I shoot them with #1 )

Prevention is the best cure. Go to your local hardware store and purchase the expanded metal lath that you put up for stucco to adhear to. Cut the pieces in half length wise. ( about 15-18" wide)

Dig down about 10-12" from the side of your shed and out about 5 inches and put the expanded metal lath down in the trench and out at the bottom. Nail the top to your shed. Refill the dirt you dug out.

Now the groundhog will come in contact with sharp metal and will find a spot that is easier to dig :D

Cured our grass rat problem.

Re: Ground Hog (2nd life)

I can't use poison due to neighbors animals that run loose. I don't care for the cats, but knowing they belong to the neighbor girls would break my heart if something happened to them.

I like the idea of expanded metal. I got some scrap left over from an old trailer bed that I replaced with 5/4 wood. If it knaws through that, we are all in trouble with the ground hog from Chernoble...:D
