I speak english.
I speak very good english.
I grew up in boston.
I have a noticable, but not horrible boston accent.
I am extremely smart, and have very little patience for idiots or liars.

See my "paypal" thread for the particulars.

But I think business' are getting sneaky here.

I had to call paypal 5 or 6 times yesterday. Every time I got an indian person. Now I don't know about you guys, But I absolutely can not understand an indian person, wether english is their first language, or their second. I always have to ask to speak to somebody who speaks better english, and when I get transfered, I always seem to get somebody worse.

Now here is the kicker.

Every time I called they introduce themselves on the phone, I talked to both men and women. I asked them what country I was calling and they did confirm it was india.
On the phone I spoke to a Richard, a Stacy, A Paul, A John, A Denise, and a Michael. They were all %100 Indian.

When in your life have you ever met an Indian in person named Richard, Stacy, Paul, John, Denise, Or Michael??????????????? Just doesn't happen. It would be like meeting a bleached blonde chineese surfer named Brad. You just aren't going to find a person named that.

Kind of like how strippers have "stage names" I think these companies are giving their phone reps "american sounding stage names" to trick us. You know what companies, accents don't lie, I know exactly where I'm calling as soon as the person on the other end picks up.

Many phone customer service people in Asia adopt "stage" names that are easy for us to say and remember.

See my reply to your other thread.

Stage names are exactly what they are. Watch this for a pretty interesting insight into it all: http://www.hulu.com/watch/56907/30-days-outsourcing

This practice has been going on for a long time now. It's way cheaper to paid someone there to sits by the phone then someone here in the U.S. Wait until you have to talk to someone about technical issue, both of you will be confuse. GE Medical Systems used to have their tech support dept. in India. A few years ago, I got a follow up phone call from a regional service manager and I let him know how I really feel about it. Guess what? they moved all of their service operations back to Jupiter, FL. No more talking to Habib, I mean Harrold when calling GEMS. AT&T is still doing this. Some of them are not hard to understand at all. If they call you back for a follow up survey, which they do, make sure you tell them how you don't like the practice.

BTW, the first time I drove to Boston, I got lost. Imagine that huh? I called the Best Western, asked the front desk guy for direction. I gave up after 5 minutes of repeatedly saying what? I flagged down a cab, followed him to the place and paid the cab the normal fare as if I was riding in it.

I mean, the guy is talking about how smart he is, and how good at English he is, and his post is full of errors?

I thought the same thing, sort of skargo. But remember, one's ability to type and spell are not always indicative of their speaking abilities. I am a great speaker, but I don't spell well, and I rush through my typing, as well as any hand-written material.
I am sure you were joking, but you have to take it a little easy sometimes.

Jason, you are not alone in your dilemna. Most people I know now can't understand Indians on the phone. However, thanks to attending college for three years, with math and science concentrations, I do not share your difficulty. Once you "tune it to" their speech patterns, understanding them is not that difficult.

I love the "stage names" too, by the way.

I phoned once on a portable stereo that stopped working for warranty. I started out phoning Jamaica and was transfered to India and then to China to be transfered to the States to get transfered to Toronto to be transferred to Vancouver, Victoria and then Campbell River. Campebell River is two hours away. It was kinda cool talking around the world on there dime.

Jason it depends what time of day you phone on who you get on the other end of the phone. Also what your product your phoning on.

I can appreciate your frustration

A lot of call centres are in India now. Try calling Dell tech support.

Re: Grrrrrr phone "customer service" people..... New business tactic I think

OK, here is my story Jason.

I am sitting at my office (end of B/fast bar in the kitchen), phone rings, kid answers it....and a real confused conversation goes on....he hands it to me....'someone real strange here Dad'....so I say 'gidday'

This woman introduces herself (couldn't understand that at all) and says she is from the "Neeesh-on-ale Pain Cow-pain-ee"
"What?"
get the same again. I am really confused!!

Now, sitting right in front of me is a letter and a free sample pen, just arrived.
I get about 4 of them a year, and every October I order 400-500 pens with my name on them to send out to store managers.

The penny drops.
"You don't mean the National Pen Company do you?"
"Yeees Siiiiiiiiiiiir"....(bingo)....
"Where are you from?"....
"Tennessee"...(holy mother of god...I never saw that one coming).
"Is that anywhere near Alabama?" I ask.
"Yes Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiir, right next door Siiiiiiiiiiiiiir. i come from Alabama. Do you know someone there?"

(I was just about going to say no, but would my mate Spots in Mississipi sound like you)

"No. My 15yr old is reading To Kill a Mocking Bird in grade 10".
"Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh loooooooooooooooorrdy beeeeeeeeee!!"

Anyway, i need the pens, the price was right, she gave me a further 15% off etc etc, we did the business. She was a very nice lady.

I can't say i dislike the Indian call centres.
I understand they are highly educated hard working people who try really hard.
My phone provider (Optus) use them, and I don't necessarily like talking with them, but i do listen closely, and I think I always come away with the correct info.
I find their english is actually more pure than ours....(maybe that's not hard for an Aussie), but I have said on occasions I don't understand their english so lets go over it again, and they are very helpful.

Guess it is just the way the world is.
Cheers

I use firefox when spelling is critical, cause it has spellcheck and Internet Explorer for most of my stuff like Iboats. I too prefer to do my business with someone here that speaks natural english but cant always. Funny true story is when an ATand t person called me from india with a sales promotion. I said "Im sorry ,but I dont speak english" he said "YOU mean you dont understand what I am saying right now?" I said "Nope ,not a word" he hung up Im sure very confused,,LOL

I know all about call centers and i work for att and they have a second line of support for techs that are all in america taking calls. I'd advise asking to speak to their tech support or the next lever up of tech support
