Two females came looking at my boat. One did a muff-test on the motor. That one forgot to tell the other to let the water into the motor before trying to start it. It turned over, but let out a pop sound, according to my wife (who doesn't know proper procedure for a muff test). Females left in a hurry, according to my wife.

Now the engine, won't turn over, and certainly doesn't want to start. Smoke now comes out of my batter compartment. Did they screw it up?

No, now that I have calmed down.

Can anyone suggest where to start to fix this?

Well if it's an electrical problem (smoke from the battery compartment) I would start there first. Check to see if the battery is (1) damaged i.e. exploded (2) if the connections are free of corrosion and are tight (3) if the battery has a full charge (12 volts or better)...

check inline fuse near the starter solenoid.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad
