I usally keep a tight eye on my accounts but with school going on I miss a day here and there. Well monday night I'm sitting at the computer paying the bills when I notice that my credit card balance is lower than it was and I haven't charged anything. So I pull up the History and some A$$HOLE stole my number and used it to charge gas in Brooklyn NY, on 10/28 and 10/31.    I'm am so pissed. Fortunately I'm only out $50.00 But that's not the point.

Everybody Make sure you check your credit statements. What is really spooky is that they got the Number & expiration date because my wife and I still have our cards. I know where it happened at so I'm sicing my PD on them Probably will never get the money back though.

Doesn't your credit card company supply insurance
for that sort of thing?

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

I am a little confused: How did the scumbag use card numbers to buy gas? Don't you need a physical card for the gas pumps?

Most credit card companies now protect against fraud 100%. I'm sure they will give your money back and sick their lawyers on the case.

I only had 1 of my cards breeched, but the company credited my account right away and went after the low-life that did it.

H.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

Apparently, There has been a scam going on at the station where this happen at has scammed 5 other people. What the are doing is taking all the information of the card at the time of payment the going someplace else to use the cards.

Just an observation, but the station is run by immigrants and conjecture with the Captian at our PD is that they go to a friends station and test the card, then they do a big purchase. He was telling me that one woman was taken for $4,000.00

I'm out the $50 had I found it sooner within 72 hours I would have been fine. I just hope they catch the scumbag.

As to how they used it with just the Number, When the card does not process right you can force the number but you need the Exp date. Apparently they had both.

jgregory

Ask your credit card company to forgo the $50 charge.

They often will if you reported the fraudulent charges promptly.

Should be no time limit on fraud..all retail stores keep a copy of receipts..What do you think they do with them after a period of time. You would hope they would shred em..Some time go look in side dumpster out side of retail store. You would be surprised..

I shred here but and very seldom ask for ID unless they pull up with uhaul and want to take with..Then i get everything but their first borns birth certificate

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

Federal law limits your exposure to $50. Contact the card company many will wave the $50 if asked. Notify your company of the Fraud by phone AND follow up with a letter, return receipt requested, keep a copy of the letter and the return receipt forever.

Contact all 3-major credit reporting agencies and put a fraud alert and ask that it be put at the FRONT/TOP of the reports. Get a copy of your credit report from each major bureau, I think the reports should be free since you have a problem, several states require the agencies to give one or two free reports per year.

The crooks may have opened accounts in your name; :( one of the favorites is to open a store account in an electronics / furniture store…
How are you enjoying your new big screen TV with 6-channel surround sound?

Just my .02

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

Thanks guys for all the advice. As I'm still in the process of filing w/the Credit Union I don't know where I stand. This Scumbag while he may have run up $55.00 there was only another $50.00 of room on the card. $3,000.00 credit limit by choice I personnaly hate credit cards but they are a neccessary evil. Was working on paying it down after buying Boat trailer, all the stuff I need to restore the floor, and My brother-in-laws funeral really destroyed whatever balance I had left.

So The Scumbag was not going to get far. And our local PD is hot on they're trail. It was the only place the card was literally out of my hands. So I'm now in a holding pattern waiting for the dust to settle.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

If you use the credit card reader at the pump, no one but you can see your number or the expiration date. More reason to drive-on if there is not a modern card-reader pump for you to use at the filling station.

Who needs to hand your credit card or debit card to a perfect stranger for processing. Duuuuuu

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

Hey Erie guy there are still stations that do not have those readers at the pump. This Station in particular is one of the cheapies in town they are not one of the big ones like Exxon, Mobil, or Shell. They generally run about $.05 a gal less than the Exxon or Getty thats in town. But they will not be getting my business anymore.

And just a side note the Mobil at the 76 truck stop out by me still has the old fashion readers where you have to give them your cards.

So who's the Duh!

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

I run a Hess gas station/c-store and when our card readers don't work (satellite problems) we process credit through a swiper that uses phone modem. We are required to also make a physical imprint of the card. You can challenge any charge and if the merchant can't prove that your card was physically there they get charged back(not paid). Once or twice a month I get notice of this and have to provide copies of my transaction to prove my case. I believe only a merchant or clerk who is involved can run a number without the card in hand. You would do well to pursue the merchant who authorized the sale.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

Neil, Thanks for the info, as the cops and the Credit Union is now envolved I will check this out with them. I don't want to upset any criminal prosecution. My Information definitaly narrowed the time line and the place. I may inadvertantly alert the perps and I want to see them behind bars. But I will check it out though.

How does that work though, they must have a forged signature. What do I have to do prove there is no way I could have been there.?

Oh yeah, Even though it was only $55.00 The cop told me that it is a class 3 felony in New Jersey to use anothers card for fraud.

WARNING! WARNING! Stay away from Raceway gas stations. They may be only in New Jersey but nobody told me I could not give out the Station name. There is a bunch here in Central Jersey.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

This same type of thing just happened to me. I got my statement and there were two charges for spyware software on there.

I alerted my credit card company right away. they noted it in their logs. The statement had a form on the back to dispute charges. I was told to fill that out and send it to their investigation address. I got 2 letters from the Credit card company showing me more details on the charges to make sure I did not forget I made them. I had to sign these and send them in within 10 days of receipt. The credit card company is not charging us. They also over-nighted new cards with new numbers for the same account so nothing else was charged to our account at our request. We will see what happens. We will not be responsible for the charges.
