Has anyone tried Gruber Power Services 12 Volt trolling Motor batteries? I'm thinking about getting three for a 36 volt but don't know if there very durable. There about half the size of a regular battery, $53 on ebay.

Re: Gruber Batteries

There is no "recommended" battery but bigger (in terms of Amp/Hours or reserve capacity) is always better. You cannot go too large with troller batteries, just too small. My recommendation is to always buy the largest capacity deep cycle battery your budget and boat can stand. That means a group 27 is the smallest I install in any of my boats. Because of space considerations, you may be limited to a group 24. But always compare the reserve capacity when comparing batteries. One group 24 battery may have 100 minute reserve capacity while another may have 115. You want the larger capacity unless it happens to be a very cheap battery. You may find that cheap batteries require more frequent replacement and since you need three -- spending a little more up front may save money over the long haul.

Re: Gruber Batteries

I am going to contact the company to see what they say about it. I really like the weight and size but I think I would rather go with a bigger battery. Thanks

Re: Gruber Batteries

Bigger in physical size has no relationship to "electrical capacity" so just because a battery takes up more space, does not mean it is bigger electrically. Make sure you understand what you are looking at. These are probably AGM batteries (the technology) vs flooded cell lead/acid as is the case with a standard battery. AGM batteries require special chargers as they can be destroyed by improper charging. Again, know what you are dealing with.
