I am looking at a 1998 16 ft Gruman aluminum boat with a 60HP Evinrude. I have little knowledge or experience with this brand of boat. Have had some experience with other hulls which are welded. How does this brand hold up compared to others, How much do I need to worry about leaks with this being a riveted hull...

If its the same Gruman that built single engine planes, then I would think the riviting would be excellent...I have heard in the past that they were well built boats.

My son bought an 80's something 16' Grumman - w/ 40 hp Johnson. Used/abused it more than 6 years fishing and duck hunting. Only reason he sold it was to get a bigger boat. I used it on several occasions and was impressed by it. It did have one problem with leaks - the engine mounting bolts were not properly sealed and water would seep in there. None of the rivets leaked. Boat is still in use.

Tcube

My father has a 16' Grumman with a 70HP Merc., console and livewell. He loves the boat, but regrets not getting the 90HP.

My friend has a 15’ with a 40hp merc and the thing is built like a tank….It is a great boat!!! BUT I think they were bought out by Lowe in the late 80’s early 90’s.
