Guidance with neutral safety switch repair quote

I took my boat to a marine mechanic who has diagnosed the problem to be a faulty "neutral safety switch". I have no idea what all is involved in that repair, but he is quoting $500.00 to fix it. Seems high but really have no idea. The estimate says "replace safety assist and relay". The boat is a 2001 with a 5.7 Liter fuel injected Volvo-Penta. Do I need to keep looking or does this sound reasonable?

Any guidance is appreciated.

Re: Guidance with neutral safety switch repair quote

First of all...Welcome to iboats..I would try to get another quote. If that isn't possable just go in and talk to the guy. Find out why it is costing so much. It could be the part costs a lot or he is charging you a lot to do the job. Some people have some jobs they "hate" to do and will charge you a lot just because of that. But don't just blow it off, talk to him and see what it is all about. Maybe he can just get you the part and you can replace it. But ya won't know till you talk to him.

Sounds like he wants to replace the whole control along with labor.
