Hi everyone,
I put in a new transom on my 72 Glastron V97. My question is would it be better to rebuild the engine and stern drive ( 302v8 & Volvo 270 ) or refit with modern drive train?

Are there any companies that have exact fit turn key drive trains? Thanks in advance!!!

Since youve already done the transom, your kinda limited to Volvo at this point....a complete modern drive system will prove cost prohibitive imo, but you can upgrade the drive to a later aq series, like an aq290 or 290dp, and gain power tilt/trim and the dp performance, but you still would need to change from the ypipe back, including transom shield.

A donor boat with a gmv8 with a later aq drive would be the least expensive way to get everything you need.

Gotcha. The aq290 will match the bolt pattern from the 270 on the transom then?

yes, all the aq series bolt up the same. The issue you will have is the ypipe has different configurations in the exhaust port, and the ford v8 pipe for the 290 is kinda rare, the flywheel housing uses the standard borg warner coupler, so the ypipe back if you keep the ford.

thats why a donor gm would be least expensive, cuz you would have everything. A volvo configured 5.0 with a 280dp or 290dp or sp would be a reasonable swap.

Whatever aq you chose, you need the v8 lower ratio in the drive, 1.61 for single prop, not sure of the dp ratio off the top of my head, but i think its 1.9(x )

Thanks for the info. I rebuilt the 302 but I have a cooling issue. she won't pull from the new impeller so I'm not sure if it's the drive. I wonder if it's a bad seal in the lower unit that won't allow the impeller to pull it up. like sucking pop through a broken straw...just won't happen.

check the oil in the drive for milk...if so, then pressure/vacume test.

oil is clean. I was told drive was rebuilt 8 years ago but I don't know what kind of abuse it received or didn't.

If cooling is your only issue, and not in the hypoid gearing, it may be best to trace that problem, and keep the setup you have, imo

Get the volvo manual, you can download it somewhere, i remember Don S had a link to it if you google it. Its not really a complicated drive, just needs to be in tolerence..

I was kind of leaning towards keeping the original set up. I've got the manual but my experience is restoring cars and the drive unit is a little more than I want to tear into. I may have to bite the bullet and take it to a pro.
