I have been working on my 1970 evenrude 6 h/p.
This thing ran good for two trips this spring.
It started stalling on me so this is what I have done so far doing searches on here.
I have totally rebuilt carbs, floats and all
I have replaced coils , condensers, points and plugs.
Replaced head gasket, exhaust cover gasket.
The little cork seal in the bottom of the power head and new gasket there to.
New water pump kit and t stats

Now I have 85 compression on both cylinders and it will run for a few minutes and then after about fifteen min it will start losing rp-m's
I have put a new fuel pump and changed every connection all the way to tank and replaced the tank, primmer bulb new hoses and all.
I am about ready to shoot this thing.
It will not power up all the way under a load.

Ahoy, Kat.

First rule of service: If it aint broke, don't fix it. That includes don't replace it.

The slowest and most expensive method of troubleshooting is replacing/rebuilding/adjusting stuff that is working fine.

Find out what is wrong first, then rebuilld/replace/adjust what is broke.

When was the last time the impeller was changed?

Is it losing power after 15 min or will it not power up initially?

Have you tried choking it a bit when it loses power? Pumping the bulb?

Let us know. :)

Now Bubba...don't go and get all nasty on us....just drink a 12 pack a' Bud Longnecks and get back to us in the morning......:-D

In the mean time......

Ya' ain't said nothin about if the engine is at normal temp when running. Put her in a garbage can full of water and run her at idle. May as well pop a top while yer' waitin. After she warms up, lay your fingers on the flat area on top of the block just forward of the head. If ya' kin lay them there for a few seconds without jerkin them off, temp should be ok. It'll be warm and git uncomfortable but should good. If she over heats, you'll know. You will jerk your fingers back real quick. If all the above is true, may need a pump and t-stat.

Lookin' at other things......When the engine is running, does it blow back from the carb any? Yer sure the tank is vented good? If she starts to stall, does pumping the primer bulb help any?

Don't plug her yet.....we can fix it.

Re: Guys I need yea 1970 6 h/p

JB in answer to your questions. I did a whole water pump deal last fall and only ran it twice after that. Then out twice this spring.
It never has idle good so I figured a carb rebuild so I did that. It never has what seems to me came up to its full rp-ms.
I don't go far in this boat which is very light and easy in the water so i really can't complain how she performed.
I went out this spring and she started missing and I got it back to the load ramp and noticed water on the lower plug and water on two of the screws in the exhaust cover. I did a compression ck and was down some on no. two so I pulled the head and the gasket was shot. I replaced all gaskets and new t stat.
It will start easy and run fine in neutral but drop it in gear and she won't power up to over about 40%.

OBJ a good barley malt would have went down good about three this afternoon when I found out all my work was for naught. I haven't drank in twelve years but sure was tempted,
The temp is acting alright. You can lay you hand on the head right behind the fly wheel and its hot but bearable for a while.
I thought of the reeds but there is no blow back thru the carb.
I pulled the plugs and they were wet and black and there was quiet a bit of unburned fuel in the water.
Pumping the primmer bulb doesn't help and it stay-es tight. The tank is vented good.
While I had the head off I cleaned everything good and there was no scoring on the walls what so ever.
The rings are all springing out against the wall good.
I totally rebuilt the ign. system. I figured as old as it was it needed it and I had a source where i obtained the parts real reasonable.
I know this old gal can be fixed and is just right for what I do.
Thanks guys for your response I am having brain cramps now from thinking.

OK Bubba......when you rebuilt the carbs, did you shot out all the passages with carb cleaner and follow up with compressed air? Almost sounds like somethin' partially pluggin up the high speed jet. Does she idle well?

No ob she doesn't idle well at all. I did clean out every passage. But at this point in time I am willing to try anything.
I did try to remove the jet but could not get it to budge. I soaked thet thing all night long in good carb cleaner.
I am with you on this it seemes like a fuel prob.
If I could find someone with a carb like that I would try it and see if something is wrong with the carb.
I do know the screw in the top of the carb has very little effect on it

If the upper idle screw don't have much affect, check the float level. Is this a new float...made outta black plastic like stuff? If you still have the old cork float, pitch it and get a new float. The new reformulated fuels eat the varnish off the old cork floats and before ya' know it, the cork is gas logged and refuses to float.

Could be bubba.....turn the carb upside down with the float in place. Float should set level with the bowl gasket surface.....just a hair high in the front is good. If I recall, these have a drop setting also. I think it's something like 1 1/8" max. This is with the carb right side up and the float hanging down. Measure from the bowl gasket surface to the lower edge of the float.

That could be the prob ob because I checked the level setting upside down but did not ck the drop level. I'll get right on that tomorrow.
Thanks big guy will let you know the results.

Re: Guys I need yea 1970 6 h/p

:D :D :D :D
Well JB and OBJ we did it. I started out today with a goal in mind. I pulled the carb and reset the float including the drop to.
I recked every passage and was looking at some blown up diag of the carb and one showed a gasket in-between the float bowel and the tube that feeds the lower jet. ( you know the one that comes down inbetix the float) :) I added this gasket.
I was gonna put her in a barrel of water but don't live far from a ramp so I took her to the ramp.
Low and behold she fired right up and I dropped her in gear and set the carb.
I throttled her up while on the trailer in the water of course. She throttled up and didn't miss a lick.
I went ahead and unloaded her and went up the river licdey d split. I ran her for about two miles and she cools good and runs up good.
I am happy thanks you two for putting me on the right track.

WAYDAGO BUBBA!!!!!! Glad ya' got her runnin'. Never thought about that gasket. It seals the gap 'tween the bowl and pickup tube so the only gas that gets in the tube is through the jet. Ya' already figured that out anyways.

Anywho.....time for fishin' ain't it? :-D
