I started my 165 IL6 Mercruiser yesterday for the first time this season! Sounded great, can't wait to get it in the water. I installed a FWC system this winter using a H/E given to me by a friend, its from a V8. The end cap was leaking. It appeared to be loose so I tightened it. Still leaked, even got worse if I made it to tight. I would like to put a new gasket on it. Where can I find one? will a Mercruiser dealer have one? Or should I try some kind of sealer (permatex)? I put in a 160deg thermostat and the temp did not go any higher than 160. The return raw water didn't seem too hot.........maybe because its not under a load yet and the thermostat isn't opened all the way yet?

You can get rubber gasket material from most places also. That is if you can not find the specific gasket.

Also as an after thought, sometimes the endcap is tightened too much and is dished in causing a poor seal.

Hey guys... the gasket is rubber 3 times as thick as gasket material. (DONT use that) The end cap bends usually as a result of the Heat exchanger freezing. Turn it over, hit it with a hammer to straighten and reinstall.(Its brass you wont hurt it if its on a flat surface) p.s. if you find any impellar blades in there its time to replace your impellar.

As Rod Knocking says, it has to be the right thickness.

Good call on the end cap being "dished". I took the end cap off, gave it a whack with a hammer and.........presto, no more leak! This is a great board.....thanks guys.
