Replaced everything approx 4 moths ago ( impeller, housing, bellows, risers, manifolds. Noticed I didnt have the rabbit ears on tight one day when flushing for approx 1 min. I would like to take a lokk at it and replace myself. ???? Can I pull off just the lower end of the drive and replace it or does the whole drive need to come off? Any tips would be great ! Thank you

Yes, you can remove only the lower portion of the outdrive to inspect the impeller. You will need the throttle to be in the "forward" postion before you begin to remove the lower unit...........good luck.

Thanks Capt. I will give it a go. Is there a gasket for the lower ??? If so do you use a gasket sealer? I see some of you dont. Thanks

There is no gasket that separates the upper from the lower unit. However, there is a gasket in the water pump housing. You will likely need to replace it when you remove the water pump housing to inspect the impeller. Look over the impeller very closely if you choose to reinstall it. It dosen't take much to damage it, which may lead to overheating the engine.

If you're going to invest the Effort,+ the price of the gaskets,...

Was water circulating thru the motor and coming out the back??

If yes no need for pulling the lower, however if you need the piece of mind and do pull it, makes sense just to replace it already, cause as posted by others you will need a new gasket and the impeller is cheap might as well change it out.

There is not a gasket between the upper and lower, BUT, there is a "o-ring" - called a quad ring that seals the oil passage between the upper and lower. Be sure it is in place when you put the unit back together.

Sounds like you are doing all your work in the dark bigwave, Bet you don't have a manual or you would already know the answers to all your questions.
Good news is you can download one for free. Just go up to the Adults Only sticky at the top of the forum. Go to the Service manual link and download manual #14 for you drive. Section 3B is where you want to look .
