i took my new used boat out for the first time, 1988 80 merc 3cly. rode about 15 minutes water was pumping out of drive great but the shifter started to make noise like an overheating alarm , so i shut motor of then tryed to start it it would not crank so i for some reason checked batt..terminals for tightness as i put charged batt in ,it started right up and we rode it for at least 5 miles no problem, 2nd question how can you tell if oil injection is working???
the motor is fresh water and clean

To be on the safe side, with any "new to you" oil injected motor, you should premix your gas and oil until you are certain your oil injection is working properly.

Is this an "Auto-blend" unit that mounts inside the boat? If so, it may be time to retire it and just premix your fuel. Most of these old units are dead and gone by now.

Easiest way to test injector is to mark the oil level on the tank with a pen, then run 6 gallons of gas thru the engine. Mark the new oil level (assuming it has dropped). Now fill with oil up to the first mark you made. It should take approx 16 oz of oil.
