Hello.
Just this evening while puttering around with my 35 horse Johnson RDE 19 (1957) I discovered a hair crack in the area close to the shift rod cavity. Some oil does leak out of the lower unit in that area into the bottom of the exhaust housing. The lower unit oil is a dirty grey color.
Is there a way to patch this up or do I have to think of getting a different lower unit housing?
Thank you for your opinions and advice.
Cornelis.

you can try an over the counter "cold" weld.
I've used JB weld before with good results.
it's a cheap fix if it works. try to get the
crack from both sides if you can.
good luck,
M.Y.

I'll second mellowyellow's advice. Very little to lose by trying it. Many people have repaired car transmission cases with JB - and that is kinda similar to your gearcase.
