Re: Half a quart too much...

Half a quart is not much, so it probably won't be an issue. How do you know you are only a half a quart over? i.e. could be worse if you are basing that on capacity, becasue there is no real guarantee you got all of it out when you changed. This was after a change, right?

The biggest worry is that the crankshaft will actually hit the oil sitting in the pan and whip it into a really nice foam.

I basicall filled it until It was on the full line but I guess after sitting for a bit more settled and it is on the "L" in "Full" now. I am assuming it is half a quart but like you said, you really can not tell. Maybe I should suck some out.

Have you run it? Did you change the filter? Or were you just adding as opposed to changing the oil?

I did change the oil filter as well. I have not run the engine yet But I can go buy some of those ear muffs for it and then run it.

Is it really loud when you use the muffs? Also, I need to fill the out drive oil reserve. Can i just open it up and fill it?

Yes you can fill it but dont connect it to the drive until fluid drips out the hose allowing all the air out.Charlie

Hey Crazy Charlie, I don't understand what you mean by do not connect it to the drive. It is already connected via a hose.

Ha, no but I was going to put some ear plugs on the boat, I don't want the boat to become hard of hearing... :)

Re: Half a quart too much...

It is definitely louder than in the water. Not bad at idle, but still sounds like a car with no muffler.

I bet the oil issue goes away once you fill the filter.

Carzy charlie is suggesting that you remove the hose and let it drain a little before topping off the reservoir. If you are just adding and not changing then you should be OK with just pouring it in as long as there is still some fluid still in the reservoir . . . If it is empty then there will be air in the line and hence Crazie's concerns. ;)

Ok, so it the oil in the reserve looks blue (which is what color mine is) and not bron or milky then should I really need to change it? I will do doing a complete tune up in the fall.

No, I bought it used a few months ago. I had if check by two mechanics that gave it the green light, and that is why I bought it. Is is in very good shape. when I changed the oil, I found that it really didn't need to be changed. Does the outdrive oil look blueish in your boat?

Blueish is good. The concern is that you really don't know when it was last changed . . . You're probably OK, but it is a guess.

That oil is Merc's 'High-performance Gear Oil'. You can't mix other oils with it. Go to your friendly Merc dealer and buy ONLY that oil. It's really good stuff too.

Chris............

Re: Half a quart too much...

I have an extra quart in the case. I haven’t noticed any foaming but the oil pressure gauge is at “H” for about 20 min and then it goes to about ¾ when doing 2000 rpm plus. Bring it to an idle after she’s good and warm up and its at about ¼ on the gauge. My problem was I changed the oil and added 6 full quarts. Didn’t realize that when you suck it up through the dipstick there is about a quart left in the case. What about blowin a seal? Is that a issue?
