The hard wire option is the way I'd go. It keeps things "cleaner". Unless you need a lighter.

Just make sure you fuse the line.

What is the input voltage on your gps? If it is 12 volts it will be fine to hard wire your adapter. But some cig lighter adapter have a resistor that drops the voltage to the device it is powing. Open up the cig. portion and check it out.

When I first saw the topic I thought:

1. Extend fingers
2. Place gps in palm of open hand
C. Close hand

But now I see otherwise, I know this didn't help but......... ;)

if it was me, i would install the lighter socket. this way you'll have a source for other electrical needs. maybe a hand held light or some other gizmo.

Good move...and although you didn't ask, how are you mounting the GPS? I use a handheld Garmin 12 and bought a RAM mount. I HIGHLY recommend them if you need something to hold the handheld.
