Anyone use a hand held GPS while boating on inland lakes? I have a Garmin Legend that I use for hunting and its great for finding my way to a spot at dark. I was just wondering if I got the MAPSOURCE U.S. RECREATIONAL LAKES WITH FISHING HOT SPOTS CENTRAL VERSION 5 and uploaded it, if it would be worth the money? Anybody using this software???

Re: Hand held GPS question???

I use a GARMIN GPS12MAP (an oldy but goody) and even the built-in base map is useable on the large impoundment that I run on. To reach the main lake I need to run 5-6 miles of river with many turns and lots of shallow areas so staying in the river channel is critical. I'm now intimately familiar with the river so I don't need to use the GPS for navigation but if I ever get caught in a fog or running at night the GPSs get me back to the cabin. As for inland fishing hot spots, you don't need a GPS map for that. Study any paper map and you can tell where fish "should" be at any given time. Use your locator to find structure and then use the GPS to mark specific locations you may want to revisit.

I've got some fishing map that could be sold for hundreds. Past down from my Dad to me. I want to use it for ramps, shallow waters, timber and mainly to remember where I parked the truck.

I have the Fishing Hotspots West and it is VERY good if they have actually mapped the Lake(s) you are concerned with. I was very disappointed that two huge reservoirs (Mohave and Havasu) were not included. The Lake Mead maps are awesome. If you can get a good look at your screen at any zoom level, I am sure you can set the Hot Spots map up for a decent display. For some screens and zoom levels there can be too much info for clarity etc.

I have a Garmin 176C which is bigger than a handheld, but not huge. I looked on Garmin's site and from what I can tell about the Legend it should be OK with these maps.

Thanks QC that what I wanted to hear since I already got the software 10 minutes ago (just couldn't wait). I see on Garmins site that SOME of the lakes I will be on are mapped but all are listed for hot spots. I think it will still be useful at night and plus I can plot my own stuff as I come across it.
