Re: Handheld GPS

I bought a Magellan Explorist 200 for $99 either here or at Cabella's. It is very rugged and works well. Has numerous ranges so that you can look out (over 250 miles) or come in to like 40'. Shows highways, cities and some of the larger bodies of water.

I was on a 1000 acre lake the last time out and had the gps on. I did a lot of running around the lake and the gps showed trails of where I had been.

I used it to setup the new compass on the boat.

I can walk down the driveway with it in my hand and it tells me direction of travel and speed....I walk at 2.4 mph. Not bad. It has hooked up to 11 satellites at one time. I found that my truck speedometer is accurate to 0.1 mph at 70 mph and my boat speedometer is 2 mph low at 50 mph.

Depending on what you want it to do. I would suggest what ever you buy should take chips be it a mapcreate, lakemaster or navonics. In order for it to do that you will go from a$79 dollar GPS to a $150 dollar one. I have the H2O black and white model with the navonics chip and it is truely amazing. I have not fished a lake in Minnesota or Wisconsin that it did not have the lake in it. Some of the lakes are more accurate then others. Mapcreate will give you better road detail and places like fast food and hotel information.

Re: Handheld GPS

I have the Garmin GPSMAP 76 and the unit works great. My unit base map has all the buoys and marine navigation aids but newer unit of the same type Garmin downgraded the base map where it is not near as good. Unit is hard to see when driving in the car and sometimes in the boat.

Lowrance H2O or H2O C units have a much better base map for the marine area. Unit also much brighter and eaiser to see in all light conditions. Also comes with a Power cord to plug into the lighter. Screen slightly larger also.
I think the H2O or H2O C Much better than the Garmin GPSmap 76.
