I have an Apelco 510 with a dead battery and a replacement is $80. Does any one know of another manufacturer using the same battery at a cheaper price. There must be other handhelds using the same battery. The Apelco part # is G263717-2 VDC 7.2 800mAh. Thx!

Re: Handheld VHF Battery Question

Take a look in www.radioshack.com If they don't have it you're probably otta luck. As an aside...if you buy a new handheld, consider "AA" battery (rechargeable) types. You can always carry extra. I have an Icom that is rechargeable...always dead at the wrong time. :(

Re: Handheld VHF Battery Question

I have not found the battery pack you listed for less than $74. The other option you have is to have a compnay rebuild the battery. They open the case and put new cells in. this is usually cheaper. If you get a reputable one, they can give the options of the type of batteries and their idividual pluses and minus'. Here is one.
https://www.batteries4everything.com/index.html

Their number is 1-800-321-0714
They want a call to quote a rebuild.

Re: Handheld VHF Battery Question

Figured it out thanks to "boatbum". Opened battery pack up and replaced with batteries from Radio Shack. Didn't know it could be done. Spent $20 instead of the $80 to replace it. Works Great! :p

Glad you found a new battery pack. What type battery is it?? If it is a ni-cad make sure you run it down before recharging. Also do not leave a battery run down for long periods of time. When it runs down recharge right away.

Re: Handheld VHF Battery Question

I know lead/acid batteries should not be left discharged, but I thought I read somewhere that ni-cad's should be left discharched for long periods of storage. Does anyone have the skinny on this.

i.e. you don't want to fully discharge a lead acid before charging.
