Standard Radio makes a very good radio. Have 3 handheld Amateur radios.

Re: Handheld VHF Recommendation?

If you just want something for basic, short range communication, Walmart sells Midland's Nautico for a bit over 60 bucks. It comes with rechargeable Lithium Ion battery, a wall charger, a cigarette lighter charger, a totally useless headset/mic and a very nifty molded plastic pouch, that you can use to keep the thing waterproof. I haven't tried it yet, but I think the radio is operatble while inside of the pouch. When outside of the pouch, the radio is water resistent, only.

It has a channel 16 button, all the usual channels, NOAA weather radio, monitor scan, hi/lo, etc. To me, these radios really give you a lot of bang for the buck. They are so cheap and the pouch is so cool, that I am seriously considering having pockets sewn on a couple of my PFDs to equip them with a radio.
