Hi, I bought a boat last year and recently got into boating on the Hackensack River here in NJ. It is a tidal river up to the dam at Oradell NJ. I boat the tidal section which comes in from NY Harbor, goes into Newark Bay, and up into the marshy tidal river. Anyone familar with this river knows what a hidden/under appreciated/abused gem of a river.
I have a 14ft alum starcraft v hull (56in berm) with a 20hp Johnson on it. It moves pretty good. I have a question:
When taking on the wake from larger boats I usually aim for the waves and 'hop' them. I have also let the wake from a passing boat hit me broadside as I am going forward and it kind of hoped/rocked side to side on the wake. Whats a good strategy for taking on large wakes? Slow down? Hop it full throttle?
Whats too big of a wave for this boat. I have been on the river as the tide is flowing out, and the wind is coming up making 2ft rollers. I just stay low and full throttle and hop it. Is this the best method for handling this type of water?
Also, that river changes its mind very fast when the wind and tide is right. On windy days I get blown all over, should I put some cinderblocks in the front of the boat on solo excursions to keep from getting blown all over? The boat comes off plane and sits in the water just fine. I have the motor on the last pin. Just looking for some boat handing tips for my little tin duck banger/cruiser.
Thanks,
Vince
