I posted messages on a Mercury forum with no help. Mostly read the manual--I have.

I have trouble starting a new 50hp motor that came on my Tracker Pro Guide. The motor started right up at the dealer the day I picked it up--I'm thinking now he probably had it running before I got there. The motor starts up fine if it's been running. I know every motor starts a little different, but I'm almost running the battery down--I have--to get it started. Also, is there a prime on the motor itself?

Not to insult your intelligence, but are you choking it (pushing the key in) when starting it?

Squeeze fuel line primer bulb till firm.
Increase throttle to half throttle.
Turn key and choke for 5-8 seconds (trial and error)
Release choke.
Continue turning key till it starts.
Pull throttle back when it starts.

Is this motor new or used?
Don't crank engine for more than 30 seconds or you run the risk of burning up the starter.

Re: Hard Sarting Merc 50hp 2stroke

I found on mine (1993 Merc 60HP 2-stroke 3 cyl. ELPTO) that it REALLY, REALLY help when it's trimmed fully down (maybe something to see with carbs bowls filling).

If i'm on a ramp that doesn't allow to fully trim it down, it could take more than 6 tries to get it started with a lot of throttle lever playing. When it sit straight, it usually start on the first try with the bulb primed and 8 seconds of holding the "choke" (in fact it's an enrichener that put more gas).

Hope it could help.
