Hard Shifting

Hi everyone,
I have a 1989 Bayliner Capri with a 2.3L OMC Cobra. I am having trouble shifting into reverse from nuetral. Shifting into forward is not a problem, but when I shift from forward into nuetral and then try to shift into reverse, the throttle handle sticks and then eventually will shift into reverse with some force. This doesn't seem to be the case when the engine is off, shifting is much easier. Can anyone give me a idea what might be causing this?

Re: Hard Shifting

Yeah bad lower shift cable. get your tools from these guys http://www.marinepartshouse.com/index.php/omc-boat-parts-omc-tools-c-23_26_1837 and get the cable off ebay it is about $70 free shipping and comes with OD gaskets. Read threads by hawkins? and your OMC service manual. Easy test also is to remove control cable linkage from the engine shift plate and see if you can move the arm freely. If the arm/cable does not move freely, cable is bad. Also check and see if control moves freely while not attached as well. Just pulled my 25 yr. old cable.
Bad lower shift cable.
