hard start when cold

there appears some type of enrichment solenoild on fuel pump side of engine?it has a red lever that will rotate approx. 1/2 turn,will this help my cold start issue,the motor has always been hard to start wnen cold even with ignition key "pushed in " for choke feature,also it bogs down on hot restarts like its starving for fuel,backing off throttle and repriming the bulb seems to help,thanks for any response,,2000 200hp

The red lever should be folded back, parallel to the solonoid body, for normal operation.

Use this procedure to start.

1. Squeeze primer bulb on fuel hose until firm.

2. Turn key to "ON" NOT start.

3. Push key in and count to eight.

4. Release key.

5. Start engine.

6. "Bump" key as needed to keep engine running.

Warm start should require only turning the key. Your primer bulb should stay firm longer than it takes the engine to cool down...if you have to reprime then you're losing pressure somewhere.

Inspect your fuel lines including those under the cowling. Listen for the sound of sucking air at the tank and engine fittings while you pump the bulb...if they're pretty old might as well replace 'em they're not too expensive. Same with the bulb...advise spending the extra $7 or so to get the OMC bulb, the cheapies aren't that durable.
