I have a 99' Volvo penta 3.0GS. Yesterday I brought the boat out to the lake , It started and ran fine but when I use the key to turn off the engine it sputter for 5 sec before it completely turn off. After parking for about 45 minutes the engine wouldn't start. It turn over and crank for 1 or 2 sec then turn off. I had to put the throtle to forward and rev the engine when it crank up and finally my boat start. Can you guys tell me what cause that. It start and ran fine after that when the engine is warm. I recently change the spark plugs . Had about 1/4 of the gas tank at that time and don't know if that's the cause of the hard start. This is my first boat and to me it seems like I cannot rev my engine(raising the RPM ) when I'm in Neutral. Is anyone have a boat that is set up like this, I mean the only way I can rev the engine is to put it on Forward or Reverse . By the way it's a Seaswirl boat. Thank you in advance for any help.

Re: Hard start !!!

After a hard run, you should let the engine idle for a bit before turning off.Its also not a good idea to over-rev the engine out of gear..could be a safety feature not letting over-rev in neutral. The hard start could be from a flooded engine if you did'nt let it cool down after a hard run.Someone farmiliar with your boat might chime in to give more specific advice.

Jim

Re: Hard start !!!

what do you mean it would crank for one or two seconds? If you were to turn the key to start it would the starter keep rolling for as long as you held it?Are you sure that you had 1/4 tank of gas?Maybe you were really sucking fumes(empty tank). What are your RPM's at idle in nuetral?

Re: Hard start !!!

Sounds like old or low octane fuel.Don't let it diesel/run on with the key off.you'll suck in water through the exhaust.
