A friend of mine has my old 165 mercruiser with the aformentioned 250 GMC 6 cyl. It has always started easily cold, until recently. He has not had it in the water for 2 years but has ran it on a water hose. Did not start it for about 6 months due to surgery. Now it is very dificult to start and he has to use something to help start it; he removes the carb filter and primes it at the carb throat, then puts the filter back on before starting it. It always starts and idles/runs very good. Any thoughts on why this is happening? Could all of the fuel be running back into the tank from the carb?

sounds like a bad acculator pump or plugged acculator pump passage time for a rebuild of carb.

Thanks for the response. What is an "acculator pump". The carb was just put on (a remamufactured model) year before last and has seen little use.

I think he's talking about the accelerator pump. Maybe the passage is just gummed up from sitting. If you look into the throat of the carb and pump the throtle you should see 2 streams of fuel. If you do, then I would say the accelerator pump is ok.

Possible the choke butterfly is stuck also. When cold, is it closed?

Thanks for the reply guys, will check out all. And the age of the gas is not an issue because he puts in small amounts to run on for this purpose.
