hey guys i have a 62 johnson 10 hp. the only way i can get it started when cold is to open the throttle all the way in neutral and with the choke on. then as soon as it fires you have to push the choke in. it revs really high untill i can get the throttle turned down and im afraid that eventually it is going to damage the motor. other than that the motor runs good. i rebuilt the carb but not sure what else to check. any help would be appreciated

You say it fires on the first pull?
Many wish they had your problem. :D
Maybe throttle back a little until you find the sweet spot.

is the starting problem on cold days? if so , try opening up the hs needle a bit , if it helps re-adjust when the motor warms up. if it needs to be wide open with choke on everyday id look into the compression first, then spark strength, then timing. jmo

How does the ignition system look? If you have bad coils, there are cases where motors have to be started wide open and they die and al lower throttle setting.

ive tried to find the sweet spot but that seems to be wide open. ive only had the motor about 6 months and i havent looked at the ignition system other than to look through the inspection hole at the coils. they werent the original and werent cracked that i could see and it has good fire. i messed with the needles but nothing seems to help. could it be points?

What do you mean wide open in neutral? Unless the interlock limiter is messed up, you can't turn it wide open in neutral. Proper starting position is put motor in neutral and turn the throttle as far toward "Fast" as it will go. It should not go to wide open (unless something is wrong with the limiter)

If your coils have been replaced, then it's likely you will need to pull your carb down and thoroughly clean all the passages. It sounds like the low speed circuit is clogged somewhere.

Just a possibility:

If the little nylon thingy that the choke slides through has a broken piece it could be a problem. The broken piece is likely the part that fits into the detent and keeps the choke knob all the way out. See if when you pull out your choke and let it go, that the choke plate stays completely closed. If not, then it will be a bear to start cold. If it doesn't crank with half a pull when warm, then you have other problems.
