Hi,
I have a 1992 Mercruiser V-8 270 hp engine with a Weber 4 bbl carb. This is in a 1990 Stingray Maxum 222 boat.
I push the throttle all the way forward to set the choke, pump it a few times, and hit the starter, It cranks and then fires for a second and dies, it keeps doing this for 5 or 6 or more times and then it finally starts, When it does start it stumbles for 30 to 45 seconds and then smooths out and purrs. When it is running, it runs great, the problem is always in starting it.

Where do you think I should check, the Clymer manual does not talk about this symptom at all???

Hi
Have you tried other start procedures?
Try to find out how many pumps it wants, start with none, and try one pump the next time, what you describe sounds like to much gas in the carb.
Regards
Affa

The smallest movement of the throttle sprays gas into the carb throat, When cold the choke is closed without me moving the throttle all the way forward to set it. Is that right???

This could just as easily be a fuel filter problem. Have you tried changing it? Also, check your manual for other filters from the tank to the engine.

It seems to be getting plenty of fuel, It seems to have something to do with the idle fuel the min it starts

sounds like the choke is adjusted to tight you are stuffing lots of gas down and not leting enough air.1 try half of pump.2 be careful and remove apark arrestor and start engine is the choke plate opening enough? when it starts to die open the plate with your finger or close it which ever helps it out. bob

Re: Hard starting mercruiser V-8

Are you leaving the throttle open a little when starting?
They like to idle a little fast for a minute or so like 1200 or so RPM.
Not very many engines like to idle slow on a cold start,on cars we had fast idle cams when choked,on these boats you have a fast idle cam but it doesn't have the fast idle steps to raise the idle. That is what the neutral warm up feature of the controls is for.
Sounds like you are flooding it to me try the above reccommendations,1/2 pump or so. Then increase to a full pump if that doesn't work.
