Re: hard starting
Welcome Mike!

Right off the cuff, sounds like your due for a carb over haul....right off the cuff.

Tell us about any maint done on the engine. Is it new to you? Has it set a long time?

Do a spark test and compression test first. Let's see what shape the engine is in.

The compression test will tell you if the cylinders are in good shape and creating the compression needed for good running and at the same time vaccum for pulling the fuel into the cylinders.

The spark will tell you if you got the fire needed to explode the fuel/air mix coming to the cylinders. Your spark should jump a 1/2" gap with a hot lighting like spark.

This all being good, we can look at the carbs. If it has set a very long time, most likely the carbs are fouled with varnish and the jets are plugged. This would give you the symptoms you described in your post.

A service manual, OEM, would be of great value to you. It can give you a load of details on the engine as well as trouble shooting info.

Don't hesitate to ask questions Mike. Lot of good folks here ready to help.
