I have a Volvo AQ271C engine it has been hard to start, the other day I got it started and it ran ok at idle and reved up to 2,000-3,000 when in the neutral position Took it out on the lake when I went to throttle up it choked out and died.
got it started again. the carb is a rochester quadra jet that is 10 years old.

has a new coil, relay, dist cap, and computer module

Re: Hard starting

I have the same carb. Very hard starting, but after warm runs and starts fine. I found that by pumping the throttle three times, then going to about 1/3 throttle and starting it, usually it will start right up...just won't idle until warmed a bit. Sounds like time for a rebuild, might be a float problem or accelerator pump. Probably going to have mine rebuilt at end-of-season, they say the QuadraJets require periodic attention.

ht up

Replaced the coil, relay, sending module, Ignition switch, circuit breaker.
Boat starts right up after a few minutes starts again, after 10-15 minutes will not start
can someone tell me what else to check for.

I still think your having a carb or fuel pump problem, but I'll let someone else chime in on this.

Re: Hard starting

Sounds like a carb problem....I'd be looking to service the carb, get a carb kit and info on settings..

Firstly though, if its got the electric choke, check its working, cause if it holding the choke flap closed when the engine is warn it isn't going to run. You should be able to clearly see if the choke flap is open or closed after you've run it for a while. If its closed I would do the following......

Mark its position (so you can put it back in the same place) remove it leaving ground connection attached, and connect a known or reliable 12v supply and see if it slowly moves. If it doesn't move in a minute or two, replace it. While its off check the linkages & choke flap are free to move.

Hope that helps.

Boat is now up and running turns out it was a bad ground coming off the neg side of the coil fixed and runnign fine
