hard starting

Hi. I have a 17' bowrider with a 3.0 Mercruiser engine. It has a carb that was recently rebuilt. I trailer it to my local launch site. Seams like every time I launch it, I set the choke, pump it twice and it starts right up. After driving it for a while, I'll shut it off for crabbing or relaxing. When I go to start it up, sometimes it really cranks over a lot to start it back up again. Any ideals why it does this? Any tricks to help it start faster? Thanks in advance.

Re: hard starting

To start a warm engine you need to have the control lever approx 25% forward. No pumping. This allows more air in to compensate for the choke which will start to close as the engine cools.

Thank you for your reply. I will try that next time out. Thanks again.

Re: hard starting

The official Merc starting prodecure for a carbed engine:

Push THROTTLE ONLY button and position throttle setting as follows:
COLD ENGINE - Move control/throttle lever to full throttle, then return to about 1/4 throttle. In extreme cold
it may be necessary to pump lever more than once.
WARM ENGINE - Move control/throttle lever to 1/4 throttle position.
FLOODED ENGINE - Move control/throttle lever to full throttle. Be prepared to decrease engine speed to
1000-1500 rpm as soon as engine starts.

Re: hard starting

Are we thinking that 1/4 throttle is past the detent position when in neutral?
