Hard Starting

I have a 89 170 classic with a 3.0. The boat starts up great when cold after a run when coming to dock it will die when trying to coast in a low throttle and won’t start back up for awhile. Once I get it going almost have to drop it in gear sometime it will die with a pop out of the carb.It is not overheating. Any ideas?
