I own a 89 Stott craft 16' bass boat with a 115
merc 6l and it takes two hands to turn the stearing even on the trailer it looks to have a rack n pinion sys on it.I was wondering if it was better to try and free this cable up or to just buy a new cable or a new sys?
Thanks TNRVROC!

Re: HARD STEERING

Try to pinpoint the cause of problem before you start throwing money at it.

Disconnect the cable from the motor.
The problem could be in the tilt tube on the motor.
Or in the motor pivot in the mid section of the motor.
Or in the cable(s).
Or in the helm itself.

With the cable disconnected:
Does the motor now turn easily?
Do the cables now turn easily?

If the cables are the problem, I would replace them.

Also, if it is in the helm itself, you may have to replace it, as parts are not available for the older inferior systems.

Let us know what you find.
