Re: hard to cold start

Could be the float levels in the carbs.
I had a 88/85 that did that and never did figure out the real reason.J

Sounds like your linkage is not adjusted properly and your not getting enough fuel in high idle. By tilting he engine, you are allowing fuel to flow out of the float bowl and into the intake. Then the next time you turn it over, it has the richer mixture that it needs to run cold.

Re: hard to cold start

Make sure your choke is functionning? I had the same issue a few years back same exact motor and year. The problem was the choke wasn't functionning properly due to bad ignition, so to initially get the boat started I would have to tilt it. The boat would then start normally for the rest of the day. make sure the choke plates are closed for the duration that you have the key pushed in and not just for a second.

Make sure choke functions (clicking sound when key is pushed in)
Make sure all choke plates are closed when key is pushed in (should be able to put a piece of paper under each plate)

Hopefully this fixes the problem for you as it did for me. If not Check floats and needles.

Hi,Paddymichaud,
