hard to shift in to gear 50hp mercury

I have a 1993 mercury 50hp its hard to shift in to gear with the remote the remote is good but the motor is hard to shift by hand it does go in to gear but hard to please help

Assuming you are pressing the shift button down when pushing the throttle arm, if it is tough it could be the shift cable. You can easily remove the cable connection at the bottom side of the port side of the motor. After that, see if you can move the shift/shaft linkage by hand. At that point you can also see if the cable moves freely by using the remote arm. You should be able to at least narrow down where the problem is coming from...<br /><br />Keep us informed
