Hi folk's, is it the nature of the beast to be a hard starter? 1984 Evenrude 150vro. It takes alot of cranking 3 to 4 mins before it will start. When it does start it sputters for just a second and than it clears itself out and idles great. If I push my key in that is the choke but I dont know if it works or not, how could I check that? After the engine is worm 'bout 1 min it will start as soon as you hit the key. Any ideas?
thanks alot, this site has been a big help for me. THANKS EVERYONE/EVERYBODY/EVERYTHING......... peace

Heaty1, it DOES sound like it's not choking.
When u push the key in to choke it, you should hear an audible "click" from the motor. It is possable that the shaft from the choke solenoid (if so equipped) has loosened-up,and not closing the choke plate on the front of the intake. Regardless of what activates it, the plate should close when you push the key in.
Not familiar with your engine, but I hope this helps.

------------------
Time to change my tagline

I'm having an identical problem on my 1976 Mercury 1150. Thanks for the idea. I'll check the choke solenoid.

kudos to this forum.

I have a 1979 Johnson 150 V6. Very similar engine to yours. There is a manual choke lever you can engage at the carb. If you take the cover off of the intake, you can see if the flaps are closing when you engage the selonoid at the key. There is no flap on the the top carb on my engine.

My engine is the same as yours. First crank of the day is tough, everytime the rest of the day it is an instant start. I just figured it was age. But since joining this board, I have paid close attention to the quality of my oil and the precision of which I mix, and have gone from 93 to 87 octane, and the problem is getting a little less frustrating. I also pump as much gas in the carbs as I can for that first crank, and that seems to help. The problem is worse when the engine has been tilted up overnight, so I figured the gas was draining out of the carbs. I have no accurate way of guessing the hours on this engine, although it has been in the family since knew, I took it 4 years ago. I am guessing between beetween 1000-1300 hours. Still runs like a scalded dog.

Good luck.

The motor does not have choke butterfies. The electric primer sprays fuel directly into the manifold. It can be bypassed manually with the little lever on the primer solenoid. To start it you turn the lever 1/4 turn then prime the bulb on fuel line then return to original position and crank.

I have the same hard start at the beginning of the day. Now with throttle wide open I spray mixed gas down its throats.
Then do a normal cold start.
Repeat total proceedure if necessary and it starts.
I think the antisyphon in the gas pump has to be changed, the carbs are always dry in the morning.
If you have a primer use it a number of times before cranking. As many times as necessary to get the piston to fire immediately.

Hey guys, same exact problem on my buddies 90 150 evinrude 150. You need to change out the VRO pump.
Reason-
1) oil from the pump is under pressure, when it is shut off there is a check valve in the VRO pump that stops oil from entering the cylinders.
2)if the check valve malfuctions you have two things that show up,
a) the cylinders get excess oil in them, therefore when starting cold, the excess oil needs to vacate the cylinders for proper firing. takes some cranking.
b) if you have oil running down the outside under the cowl after shut off in the up position (next day or after trailering home), this would also be a tell tail sign.

His motor starts without a hitch after this was replaced, no tune up, nothing else. Just FYI

I had a v4 Johnson that hated to start when the motor was tilted up at all ... if it was flat it started almost as good as my merc !!
