Hi, My Yamaha 40 HP 2006 model starts 1st time everytime on muffs. However, I often have to try more than a few chokes before it could start when in water (at cold start) I just changed the spark plugs, cleaned the fuel filter and changed the gear oil.

First I lower the motor to let in merge in the water. It is electric start so I just... turn the ignition key. If it doesn't start, I wait for about a few second then pushed the key in to hear a click at the motor then start again. I repeated until it starts. Did I do anything wrong??
Oh, I forgot to pump the rubber bladder today :) but sometime it still hard even if I pumped.

If the motor is carbureted put the motor in the water. Turn the motor over. This gets the impeller wet. Tilt the engine back up ( out of the water ) and try again. It seemed to work for me.

A two stroke will run GREAT on the muff's, out of water.

Put a load on it, in water, and it will show it's true colors.

You are missing a cylinder, or two.

Find out which cylinder is not pulling its load and you'll be fine.

I'll bet it's a gummed up carburetor. My bet is on the lowest carb. Lowest meaning the bottom.

Time for a good manual and carb. rebuild kits.

post the model number, that should be a Prime start motor. Prime start meaning the only action required by the operator is to turn the key.
if it wont start as designed its broke.
could be the enrichment mechanism is bad or any other adjustment is out.
the smaller prime start motors are pretty touchy about debris and adjustments.

Sorry for my ignorance but I thought it should be the same on muffs or in water when the propeller is not spinning. I.e. how does the motor feel the "load" when the propeller is not spinning yet?

Rodbolt, it's an Australian version of a 2 stroke motor (only 2 cylinders). The model number is:

40XWT

and serial number is:

66TK L 1302062

I have a CD of service manuals for all American models but could not match one with my motor.

Also, unfortunate for me, I just realized that the water pump is not working. It was peeing the tell-tale water yesterday on muffs and not peeing at all today :(

Looks like I have quite a few things to do with this motor!

Any further help/suggestion is much appreciated.
