I would have to say that doing a quickie rebuild with a new crank and bearings plus gaskets would be fast, relatively inexpensive and quite satisfying as far as the results. Crankshaft for a SBC just doesn't cost much. ANd the fresh rebuilt motor will need a minimum of attention.

Of note, when I bought a donor boat with a freshly rebuilt 0 hour motor, unbeknownst to me the motor had been left with the flame arrestor off the carb and a tarp over the motor. That brand new motor was full of water. I spent all told less than $600 reboring and replacing brand new shiny pistons rings and gaskets with new shinier gaskets pistons and rings. So I know just what this feels like.

almost as bad as hydro-locked motor? Been there!

*update*
So i took the old helicoil out and all the old threads in there are bigger but fine, so I got a 7/16 x20 Helicoil and put it in with out having to tap it, imm waiting gfor the bigger thread bolt, All that happened was the bolt stripped and the helicoil protected the threads, the helicoil fits perfect and hopefully all is well

The correct torque is 40 correct?

...BTW.....Chris, how is your bud's 6.2 build coming?

Slowly... We just got a couple of new alternators. Stripped them down for painting (the housings were bare ali) and found a broken wire, so that got fixed (yes, brand new with a bad solder joint ).. He's put those on and will probably be a couple of months away from getting a couple of 6.2s shipped over. We're going for shipping in 6.2s rather than building his back up.

itsbrian707 Sorry for the hijack, but needs must. ;)

All good lol did everyone hear about evinrude :(

Yep, and as a mechanic, I can't say I'm sorry. OMC products are a PITA to work on. They seem to have a committee whose job it was to make sure nothing was easy to do on their engines. The 2 worse (on the outboards) are the stupid shift rods with a kink at the end that has to go up through a rubber grommet and then in between the tangs of a fork (all while also getting the drive shaft lined up with the crank and the water tube lined up with the pump), and a stupid bolt has to go back in, complete pain to get at, especially on the V4 and V6 engines. And the thermostats and poppets in the crossflow V4s. Nice idea, complete **** location! How are you supposed to get a 7/16" spanner on the bolts when a damn cowl is in the way. And when you do get them off, getting them back on, with the springs and poppet falling everywhere, makes getting them off seem like child's play! Yeah, good riddance to bad rubbish!
