50 years ago, when the UN was formed<br />it took weeks/months for information<br />to get to the people of interest...<br />during this time the UN had a valuable <br />role in world affairs.<br />I am not yet ready to say the UN is not<br />viable, but they r sure not current IMHO!<br />(hook) what role should the UN play in the<br />world today?<br />opinions?<br />M.Y.

Untill countries are held to a universal standard of conduct before they are allowed to even join the UN it will be a total failure. Having a say in the world economy and politics should be a privlage not a garantee.

MY, as far as the UN being current, you are right, they aren't. The listed nations committing human rights violations are still committing them with the full and complete blessings of the UN, some of them are members.<br /><br />As far as the UN being a viable entity. They have proved they are not time and time again. <br /><br />Its like letting the fox watch the chicken coop as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, it has lost its place, much like the League of Nations.<br />The UN is a joke, actually less viable than the League of Nations.<br />The UN is composed of numerous nations that have horrible human rights records, with violations that continue TO THIS DAY. They do not complain ONE IOTA of these horrific violations against people who have not had a fair trial, women, children, and the list goes on. The UN actually elected Libya to be the leader of the UN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION. What is that?<br />The UN is like a child that wants it all, wants it all now. They look at the US as: "Those arrogant people worked so hard to get what they have and are so powerful, how do get some of the for NOTHING.<br />Tell them to pack it up, go to Paris, and take care of it on their own.<br />BTW, for you Liberas who go with the Dean et.al. clan, here's a suggestion for you:<br />You are so afraid of the $87bil we want to spend in Iraq.....your boy Bill Clinton got us into Bosnia with a "They'll all be home in a year" promise and.......where's that at now? BTW....We have been spending at least that much in Bosnia TO THIS DATE. I have friends that are still there.<br />My solution:<br />US to France: First off, we would like to remove the honorable graves of our people who died of gunfire, shrapnel, mines, etc. from you soil. Kofi says we Americans are all a bunch of racists for not letting him control world affairs.
