I was replacing the waterpump for my uncle on his 79' 50hp Johnson Seahorse. Last time it was done (before he owned it) the person put alot anti-seze grease on the L/U bolts, so the L/U came off without a hitch.

I then started disassembling.....
Tried to pull the impeller off the driveshaft to no avail. So I let it soak in penetrating oil for 1 hour, still nothing. Taking a closer look it appears like the impeller key, impeller hub and driveshaft have become one. .

I guess I will try to hit it with a dremel metal cutting wheel and hope I don't knick the driveshaft.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

I don't think he meant a wood chisel.
He means a cold chisel.....for metal.

I would avoid the cold chisel as well. The Dremel tool works far better. Make the cut opposite the drive key.

Use the dremel and make the cut at the drive key that way you have no chance of cutting into the shaft. Chief

OR.....use the dremel to cut a nice slot in the brass hub and smack it with a cold chisel. Comes right apart.

Use a hot solder iron to cut a slit down the middle. It will smell up the garage a bit but won't damage the shaft.

Kid

I ended up using the cold chisel, CAREFULLY. It took a little while but it came out good. No damage to the driveshaft. Thanks

As far as using the dremel and avoiding damaging the shaft - for what it's worth....

I used one to remove a pop from the prop shaft - and there was absolutely no issue in damaging the shaft. The metal of the shaft is so much harder than the metal of the prop sleeve - and I'd assume the same for the impeller sleeve - that you can ease your way through the (brass?) of the sleeve and when you get through it it will be obvious that you're through and it's easy to stop at that point. I thin I used the little abrasive wheels (IIRC) and they wouldn't touch the shaft metal but cut the brass sleeve fairly easily.
