hull speed is usually associated with displacement hulls and sailboats, most power boats are planing hulls.

For most boats there is a "displacement speed", which is the max speed before the boat begins to lift toward plane. Displacement hulls usually cannot exceed this speed without massive applications of power.

Hull speed of a boat (in knots) = 1.34 * sqrt(LWL)

LWL = length at waterline (in feet)..

Now you know why a 1000' aircraft carrier can go 35kt without having to plane.
