A friend of mine who has his own boat repair shop just had a guy bring in a evinrude with a kerosene
sticker on it. After opening the cover we found a small tank that you fill up with kerosene and the line from it goes to a primer push button ( i'm guessing that it's for that)from there it goes to the carb. Can anyone tell me more about this motor?
Does it mix the kerosene with the gas the whole time the motor is running or is it just on the start up? Do you have to use the kerosene at all?
Never have seen a motor with this on it.

As I understand it they were made for use in countries where that is the standard fuel. I have never seen a complete motor but I have seen the cylinder heads. Ths combustion chamber looked like a 5 gallon bucket.

What size is the motor?

I think it is a 35 or 45 hp. It does have a hook up for a gasoline line and he started it and it ran great. The head on this one is not oversized or big. Looks like a normal size motor.

In countries like Argentina and Venezuela it is common to run on kerosene. You'll find a couple of modifications applied that once reversed would render it operable on two stroke fuel.
First they are obviously two stroke. Secondly you'll find either an extra thick head gasket or two ordinary head gaskets. The compression is lowered by having a thicker gasket. The spark plug will be hotter than required for two strokes so change that and you'll be away. I've discovered this from a couple of Brittish Seaguls I've bought from sailors that couldn't get them to work on our fuel after purchasing them in Argentina. It's an easy fix, I guess if the compression stays low then there could be a special head sold only on that market which could be changed easily.
By the way the only change needed to convert a seagul to kerosene is to double up on the head gasket!
Ross

Re: Have Evinrude with kerosene label on it

What a neat topic. I found an old 4-stroke universal engine (no marine) that started on gas then switched over to varsol. After some research, I found the cam profile and ignition timing different from an identical gas engine.
The unit had a 2 chamber fuel tank. A small area reserved for gas, the rest for varsol.

My question is:

These 2-strokes that run on kerosene, do they still require oil mixture?

How hard are they to start?

Do they have to be started on gas/oil first, then switched over?

:)

Hi Ho Schematic,
In answer to your questions, these machines don't need oil mix as there kerosene fuel is a lower grade of refinement which remains high in lubricants. They do start up on kero and the ones that I've worked on can't start on two stroke fuel as they only have one tank. I believe the hot plug would remedy the start up problem along with the lowered compression.
I can't speak for all of them as there may well be some that can run on both fuels whenever the situation warrants.
After all why can't an 85hp two stroke run on kerosene. I wouldn't want to try it but with modifications they should.
I have run the seaguls on kerosene after being dared to by a friend and they started right up with the usual procedure.
If I recall well the other thing about kerosene is it's stability in heat, they seldom cause fires by leakage and the fuel remains stable for long sea trips - years - as against two stroke mix which deteriorates.
I just couldn't see it taking off here because of the price of the fuel.
We pay about NZ $1:15 per litre of 96 octane and kerosene is dearer.
Ross

There is 2-3 different combinations in the model number:
KC Kerosene Rope Start
KG Kerosene / Gasoline
KS Kerosene Rope Start

Like E30KCL if it's a 30 HP Kerosene-Evinrude with rope start and long shaft. I've seen it in the model number list but never heard anything about them.
http://www.marinshopen.se/guide/omc/omc8098.htm

How many HP is it?

/Bear
