Have my engine/sterndrive out...what to replace?

Before gutting my Capri's hull I detached the sterndrive from the engine and "transmission" at the pivot bearings.

My engine's been running fine and as far as I can tell the sterndrive has been fine too. I've been reading through my Clymer manual but is there much I should replace being that I have the units out of the boat and access is easy? I don't suspect any leaks into the sterndrive so I think I'm okay there. I would like to replace the oil pan gasket and bellows for good luck. OH and the oil plug seals on the sterndrive.

I've heard of other bellows being mentioned but aside from the one at the transom, my Series 400 OMC doesn't have any other bellows, does it?

How much wear can the ball gears take? Not an accurate description but I'd say mine are about halfway though...I'm thinking these are in bad shape and I should replace them at this point.

But yea, aside from assembling everything back together according to the manual, and what I've said, should I inspect or replace anything else?

Young man, i don't really want to be the one to tell you but that manual is toilet paper, if you look on ebay you might get a original factory manual, but they are very expensive.

A little better than what you have is a seloc omc stern drives 1964-86. In the upper right hand corner will be 3400.

That way when you have a question i can direct you to the correct page. And we will be able to communicate better. And it's about 35 dollars for it.

Now to your questions, yes time is now for the ball gears to be changed, see when you get past 1/2 wear on the ball gears, it puts a undo stress upon the bearings and such in the drive, and on the shaft that goes thru the intermediate housing, understand?

There is a gasket kit that you can buy that will have all the gaskets for your motor it is a master kit, and e-basic power.com has it.

You need the 3 piece kit for the oil pan, and you will have to clean real good the lower lip of the timing gear cover, to allow the little nubs on the oil pan front gasket to enter the holes that will be clogged up. I used a stiff piece of wire to clean EVERY little hole.

When you do have the pan off please hold it up to bright sunlight, do you see any little pin holes shining thru the pan, if yes new pan.

Pay attention to the lip of the pan and bolts.

That big piece of rubber is called a transom seal. and please use permatex # 5200 or something like it, to seal the large ring that is mounted under the transom seal.

You need flat plastick washers and not o-rings on the oil plugs of the out drive.

There are no other bellows but the transom seal on a stringer.

Why not check your impeller now you have it apart, and the water pump shaft, and bearing shaft.

The splines are very, very important, understand?

You have no water in the drives?

And no water in the tilt clutch housing?

How does your engine coupler look, and the drive shaft that goes into the coupler, the splines should be inspected, really, really good.

Good luck any more questions just ask !

Will definitely look into a Seloc manual then. I believe A manual is better than no manual, except maybe if it's an I&T manual for an Allis Chalmers G (another story)

I was reading about bad ball gears ruining the housing, so I'll definitely be replacing those. How long do they typically last?

Will check the impeller and associated components.

I have not found water in the any of the drives nor the tilt clutch housing.

And will inspect the coupler and shaft.

And from another thread, my T-stat and water pump. Thanks again for the info.

add a oil drain hose from your oil pan since your in there, makes oil changes much easier if diy.
