I have a 93 johnson o.b. That I have no idea what to do to it anymore I'm so clustered that when I get it fixed that I want to turn around and sell it. I've only had this boat for two months. Ok what it is doing then engine would turn over and quit would only run for a couple of seconds. Now when I got to turn it over alls I hear is. Clicking sound is this. Result of a bd starter and I need to replace it. going too have the battery load tested to make sure its not the battery even though I just bought it but when I turn the key on it says I get 12 v when u turn to crank the engine it says less than 10 so I'm thinking a bad battery I don't know I m just flustered would like to be out fishing but instead I'm sirtting in the driveway can anyone please help me

Outside of battery being bad, the number one starter problem is bad battery cables; second would be the solenoid.

Anyway, take the battery to a battery store and have it load tested. Any good store does that for free.

If the battery is not a marine starting battery or marine dual purpose battery, make sure that your new one is one of those types and minimum 650 CCA.

With a new battery of that size, the problem is likely to be resistance somewhere between the battery and the starter, which you may be able to locate by feeling for heat after attempting to start. You can also isolate the problem with a voltage drop test, using a DC voltmeter. http://forums.iboats.com/showpost.php?p=2544574&postcount=9

The solenoid is what your positive battery cable is connected to. It's basically a switch that is operated remotely by your ignition switch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqHPzc2y-YQ

Not necessarily. It may just be that there isn't enough current available to turn the starter. Bad connections are one reason for that, as is a bad battery or a low state of charge.

A clicking solenoid just means that the solenoid is working. It doesn't mean that the solenoid is bad...at least 90% of the time that's what it means. Make sure you have a good, fully-charged battery and clean every connection from the battery to the solenoid and all the ground connections.

No. It would click when activated anyway, good or bad. If it did not click, that might indicate that it was bad.

Ok so I blew another fuse again today ok actually 2 my starter still won't turn over and the starter solenoid still makes clicking sound so I was wondering if it may be bad battery cables is the provlem that the solenoid doesn't have enough power to engage the starter am I right or wrong

Probably. It should be just 3 screws plus the cable. Disconnect the cable from the solenoid, not the starter. Then you can bench test the starter with jumper cables.

If you find that the starter is bad, most shops that rebuild auto starters can rebuild your starter for you.

Ok havw the starter off how do I test to see if its a bad or good starter where do I hook the jumper cables up to. And if its not a bad starter does it mean it is the solenoid and how much is it to have it rebuilt or easier just to buy a new one

The case of the starter is ground - negative cable. Positive cable to the starter cable. If the starter works it will be unstable, so it's best to secure it.
