Have to give my wife a pat on the back and brag a little.

A month and a half ago she was called to be a long term substitute teacher in a special ed classroom, with the possibility of full time. When she started there were 3 children that the school staff said could not read, could not figure out the sounds, and just were not able to do much so they worked on life skills only. By the end of her third week she had one little boy reading full books. She sat down with some books that have a few words repeated throughout and showed him he could read. When he went back to the regular classroom it was time for show and tell, so he read this simple book to his class for his show and tell. The whole class stood and cheered. At home his mom took him shopping for anything he wanted for reading. Now 2 months later she can't keep him from reading everything he can find. Still below his class, but reading good.
Another girl the same way, combined with behavior problems, she convinced her she could read. The other day the child wanted to go show the principle, and read an entire book to him. Onle a week before they had a meeting about her and the teachers, parents and administration decided to work solely on life skills and behavior problems. Now she too is reading.
The other boy she is most proud of couldn't do math for anything. She worked with him and now his parents are annoyed that he wants to add and subtract every number he can find.

She spends evenings finding new ways to get through to the kids. Every day is a new challenge to keep their interest. She does a lot of work in the school gym with papers with numbers or letters scattered around the floor. They love running to find numbers and letters and that is a good start.

She has an interview for full time coming up next month. She has had parents request the superintendant keep her employeed, other teachers have sent memos to the principle asking for her to stay, and she has had good reports from the state educational services unit. Hopefully the right people take notice and she will be able to stay there. It is a strain on our household, but she is so happy there. She is making a differenced in the world and just loves it.
Not to mention the extra $1500 a month she will get as a full time teacher will be a big help too.
