Have you ever seen a filter this bad?

Well my 3.0 wouldn't stay idling or running without pumping the throttle and revving it up. I decided to pull the filter at the carb to replace it since I assumed the previous owner hadn't (plus the boat had been sitting for over a year anyway). This is what I found.

I wish I could see the picture. I just picked up a used boat that has sat a lot. I drained the tank, added some sea foam and some 93 octane non-ethanol gas. I cleaned the ceramic filter and the screen at the carb. They were both full of junk. The ceramic filter was packed full of stuff including what looked like hair. The one at the carb was full of what looked like mud. I guess because it was all wet with solvent. Took it out on the river and it opened up once and then wouldn't go WOT again. I took it home and pulled both filters and cleaned the "mud" out of them again. We spent all day at the lake yesterday with no issues. I didn't take any pictures but it doesn't appear that we can post pictures here anyway and I don't use photo bucket.

I will pull both filters again before I go out next time to see what I see but I bet there is junk in them again.

I would be interested to see what yours looked like though ;)

Did I read somewhere that we shouldn't use an automotive style inline filter? The engine wouldn't run right with it? I'm not smart enough to know why it wouldn't but I thought I read that somewhere.

Why not clean out your tank? Then it's no more gas trouble.

Can't see the pic of the carb filter, but did you pull the fuel pump filter also?

Clear plastic fuel filters are not marine rated for use within an enclosed engine compartment, get a fire and burn through the thin filter housing, and.......

If you're going to add a fuel filter before the fuel pump, get a water separating fuel filter, they are not all that expensive.
