Have you ever seen carpet liner in a bilge?

I bought a 1983 16Ft Invader I/O. There is a black carpet liner in the bilge, much like indoor/outdoor carpet. I believe it's original because it extends into the enclosed bow area under the deck. I'd like to take it out for better drainage but I want to check to see if it serves any purpose other than to catch leaves, junk, etc.. Is there a possibility of promoting dry rot because it stays damp longer than an unlined bilge?

Yeah, that's pretty gross. I'd be afraid to see what's under that carpet too. Does it go under the engine too? Surely that can't be factory installed.

No purpose whatsoever, except maybe aesthetic.

Also gives the mice a place to build a nest.<br />What rat said it surly can’t be factory.
