Have you ever had to use a sea anchor in bad weather or for any reason. I was actually given one by a fellow boater he was cleaning out old stuff and offered it to me. I know what its used for but is it something the avg boater uses.

How do you define "avg boater"?
I use a sea anchor to keep the bow into the wind when drift fishing.

I like it for drift fishing, too. I like having it for an emergency but hope I don't need it for that, and fir how and where I boat, for the kinds of emergency I might encounter, it has limited utility.

Anyway they don't weigh anything or take up much room.

Other than drifting for fishing as has been mentioned, unless you are planning on a trip to Bermuda, or a N. Atlantic crossing during storm season I wouldn't expect to ever use one.
